Hands-on training in cataract, refractive and corneal surgery.

Cornea, Refractive & Cataract training

Training mode

You join the cornea and cataract department as a fellow under an assigned senior consultant, one-to-one, for the full placement.

  • In theatre: you work at the microscope from the start. Your role grows from wound construction and capsulorhexis to full procedure steps, as your consultant judges you ready.
  • In clinic: you assess patients with corneal topography, biometry and IOL calculation alongside your consultant.
  • Follow-up: you follow your patients through post-operative reviews.
  • Academic: you take part in the department's case discussions.

Your actual level of involvement (observing, assisting, or performing steps under supervision) is decided by your supervising consultant, based on your previous experience, skills, competency, and overall performance.
